Haven't seen the Knicks but went to a Rangers game a couple of years ago.
Great fun. Proper American entertainment in its proper place, unlike the uncomfortable feeling when they try to introduce US tackiness to sport over here.
Hadn't a clue what was happening but still really enjoyed it. House band up in the Gods (who even played some RUSH!). At half-time, reuniting kids with their military parents that they thought were overseas. All US hoopla was there.
Probably the most enjoyable part of that trip to NY.

Been to both and its a very personal choice, as I love all sports, but I would watch the Knicks. Get someone to explain the rule nuances, such as shot clock. Its also in the garden which is an iconic venue...
The athleticism is unbelievable, its very technical, the blocking and body positioning that takes place is great to watch. Popcorn is not as good as the bowl though. :)
We can learn a lot from this sport when it comes to attacking corners and putting blockers in the way of their defenders as per the Zouma goal v Scouse.

Ice Hockey is shit and you can't see what' the fuck is going on. But at least the Rangers were good when I went so the atmosphere was decent. Fucking cold though. Seen the Knicks a few times and they've all been terrible teams but enjoyed it much more. Plus the Knicks are actually a decent side now, so probably a better game to watch.

Been to both at different times in my life.
If you are pretty unfamiliar with both, the NBA might have more easily recognisable "wow" moments (dunks, no look passes)
High level hockey skills are so quick and near the ice that they can be missed if you don't know what to look for. Fights are fights but they are short and if you don't care who wins, is it not that exciting.

Have done both and found NHL a hard watch live giiven the speed of the PUCK & probably because I knew little about it.
Though I have an aunt (beloved aunt) who is approx 90 and moved to Canada as a young woman who tells me she doesnt watch much these days as she preferred the old school madly violent game of decades ago. Amusing as she is a softly spoken church going academic & lawyer.
Much prefer NBA coming for a country that actually plays while it seems a very very minor sport in the UK.
Always try and catch a Knicks game when I am there .... last time was when Lebron James was playing for Cleveland & he single handedly beat a shit Knicks team.
They are a bit better now and have always had a good night out.
One (ONE) vote for NBA. Go Knicks!

Hands down NHL, and if NYC had an AHL team, I'd recommend that as there would be many more fights. It's also a game that is much better live than on TV.
Basketball is unwatchable for me. There are something like 6 timeouts per team per half (so 24 in all) plus corporate/tv timeouts, plus the clock stops after every basket and foul and every time the ball goes out of bounds. If it's a close game, all action happens in the last 2 minutes. It's simply way too slow.

Lived in Dallas went to watch the mavericks all the time. If you're ballsy see the touts, tickets weirdly cheaper and you can get premium seats , go in low .

Went to see the Knicks a couple of times a long time ago and the Wizards once. Loved the experience but was very different to the football. Supporters seem a lot more interested in the food and drink than the match. Everyone was constantly getting up from there seats to go to buy more food. Weirdly the only time they all seemed to stay in there seats was the half time show.
Sadly not done NHL so cant compare, they look like they take the sport more seriously though.
